Why TpT is So Great and How to Start a Store- in Spanish!

Por qué TPT es increíble, y cómo empezar una tienda, ¡en español!

Ever since I started my Teachers Pay Teachers store a little under a year ago–even earlier, I think–I wondered why there were so little resources in Spanish on TpT. And I don't mean resources for teaching the Spanish language (love you, Spanish TpT Sellers!), but resources of every other subject written in Spanish.

Time has answered me that question, and I think it's a cycle that starts with the issue of awareness. There are simply not many Spanish-speaking teachers searching TpT, because they are not finding what they are looking for, so they don't come back.

TpT is such an amazing platform. A time-saver, an idea treasure chest and an incredible supportive community! I'm convinced my lessons have gotten better as I create resources for my own students that are more engaging and even visually interesting. With each sale, I think of the teachers and students my resources are impacting. 

As a middle school teacher myself, I get how unfair the system treats us. How high the expectations are for such low pay. How many tasks are expected of us in a limited amount of time, and all the risks we face just for educating the world's children. I've found that TpT may reduce the time a teacher spends home or after school planning lessons, preparing materials and coming up with ideas, and help free up time to live life. For a couple of bucks a lesson–one that you own forever–I say my time and sanity is definitely worth more than that.

So I finally decided to contribute to making TpT known among the Spanish-speaking teacher community. I've added a new page HERE just for the purpose of learning TpT. La Misi de Español

Desde que empecé mi tienda Teachers Pay Teachers hace casi un año, o incluso antes, me preguntaba por qué había tan pocos recursos en español en TpT. Y no me refiero a recursos para enseñar el idioma español (¡me encantan los vendedores de TpT en español!), sino recursos de cualquier otra materia escritos en español.

El tiempo me ha respondido esa pregunta, y creo que es un ciclo que comienza con el tema de cuánto los maestros hispanohablantes conocen sobre TpT. Simplemente no hay muchos profesores de habla hispana haciendo búsquedas en TpT, porque no están encontrando lo que están buscando, y entonces no regresan.

TpT es una plataforma magnífica. Ahorra tiempo, es un tesoro de ideas, ¡y una increíble comunidad de apoyo! Estoy convencida de que mis lecciones han mejorado a medida que creo recursos más atractivos y visualmente interesantes para mis propios alumnos. Con cada venta, pienso en los profesores y cientos de estudiantes que mis recursos están impactando.

Como maestra de escuela intermedia, entiendo cuán injustamente nos trata el sistema. Cuán altas son las expectativas por un salario tan deficiente. Cuántas tareas se esperan de nosotros en un período de tiempo limitado, y todos los riesgos que enfrentamos solo porque decidimos ser educadores de los niños del mundo. Aprendí que TpT puede reducir el tiempo que un maestro pasa planeando lecciones, preparando materiales y generando ideas en casa o después de la escuela, y que les ayuda a liberar tiempo para vivir su vida. Por apenas un par de dólares por cada lección–una que es tuya para siempre–,yo digo que mi tiempo y cordura valen definitivamente más que eso.

Así que finalmente decidí contribuir a hacer que TpT se conozca mejor entre la comunidad de docentes de habla hispana. He añadido una nueva página al menú superior de este blog (Aprende TpT) con el único fin de aprender sobre TpT. ¿Estás interesado, o conoces a un profesor o profesora increíble y creativo que puede estarlo? ¡Comparte esta publicación con ellos y dales la bienvenida al mundo del emprendimiento docente!

La Misi de Español Blog goes bilingual!

November 2019 Update: If you happen to get to this post somehow from pins still flying around Pinterest or some other weird Internet way, I wanted to give you an update that does make me a bit sad. After a bit more than a year, I've decided that doing a bilingual blog is not going to be possible for me for now. I need to simplify my life, and making this work for every post requires much more time and training that I'm not ready to tackle. I still have a few posts in English, and I may even keep doing some, if I feel that they could benefit any teacher, not just my Spanish mates. However, when it comes to teaching strategies and resources for Spanish teachers, I will post in Spanish only. I figure that if you are a Spanish teacher, you'll understand me. If you don't because you are not a Native Speaker or you struggle with the Puerto Rican regionalisms or slang I sometimes use, just let me know and I'll clarify for you. Thanks for understanding!

I love the idea of writing. I've always had a what-if dream to sometime write children's books, and lately, teen lit. And ever since I found out blogging was a thing, I've wanted to really find something to write about that people would want to read. I figured it would be an "easy" way to become a "self-published author", at least in some facet.

But I didn't expect to question myself so badly about what to write. The thing is, I have too many hobbies and interests, and I consider myself to know a bit about a lot, but not necessarily a lot about a little. I like fashion, but I hate taking pictures of myself and I hate shopping (yep, I'm weird), so I figured that was discarded. I love art, but I'm not sure if I'm very knowledgeable about it and if people would take me seriously without credentials. I love to read, but I barely find time to do it for pleasure since becoming a teacher. I enjoy musicals, but I know a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of what a real theater nerd would know about them.

So in 2016 I finally started a real, self-hosted blog about cake decorating, which is one of the skills that I think I'm pretty good at. Sadly, I quickly found out that I had almost zero content to post about, because I had very little time to actually bake cakes to decorate. Last October, I decided to let that blog "die" an Internet death and stop hosting it.

The one thing in my life that has kept as a constant over the years is education. Although I went through a four year hiatus when I didn't teach, during part of that period I worked in a school setting as a Sign Language interpreter. This experience made me miss my job as a school teacher, and I jumped at the opportunity to give education another chance, and I'm glad I did.

I've been very fortunate to have been working at an excellent school I value a lot for the past four years. I'm passionate about education, about how kids learn, and about making school–specially Spanish class–a place students want to spend time in. So it made total sense to give blogging another chance, this time with an educational focus. Yes, I am a Spanish teacher and I know some of the things I write about may be of benefit to other Spanish or Dual Language teachers, but I am also simply a teacher. 

What I mean by "simply a teacher" is that I am like every teacher. I have struggles, I have good ideas, I have opinions. And that is something I want to share with any teacher, not just the one who speaks English, or the one who speaks Spanish.

All said, I wanted to announce that La Misi de Español blog is going bilingual! Just pick your preferred language from the button on top of each blog post. That's it! (I haven't figured out if/how I can make it work from the homepage, but as soon as you hit the "read more" button, you'll be able to pick your language). I hope this new change will open a whole lot of connections with teachers around the world.

La Misi de Español

Me encanta la idea de escribir. Siempre he imaginado cómo sería escribir libros para niños, y últimamente, me atrae la idea de literatura para adolescentes. Y desde que descubrí que bloguear era una posibilidad, quería encontrar algo sobre lo que escribir, algo que las personas quisieran leer. Pensé que sería una forma "fácil" de convertirme en autora independiente, al menos en alguna faceta.

Pero no esperaba que se me hiciera tan difícil decidirme sobre qué escribir. El caso es que tengo demasiados pasatiempos e intereses, y considero que sé un poco acerca de muchas cosas, pero no necesariamente mucho acerca de unas pocas cosas. Me gusta la moda, pero odio tomarme fotos y odio ir de compras (lo sé, soy algo extraña), así que esa idea estaba descartada. Me encanta el arte, pero no estoy segura si estoy suficientemente informada sobre el tema y si los lectores me tomarían en serio sin credenciales. Amo la lectura, pero apenas encuentro tiempo para hacerlo por placer desde que soy maestra. Disfruto de los musicales, pero sé una fracción de una fracción de una fracción de lo que un verdadero "nerd" del teatro sabría sobre ellos.

Así que en 2016 finalmente comencé un blog sobre decoración de pasteles, que es una de las habilidades en las que creo que soy bastante buena. Tristemente, rápidamente descubrí que apenas tenía contenido para publicar, porque tenía muy poco tiempo para hornear pasteles para decorar. En octubre pasado, decidí dejar que ese blog "muriera" en el ciberespacio.

La única cosa en mi vida que se ha mantenido constante a lo largo de los años es la educación. Aunque estuve cuatro años sin enseñar, parte de ese tiempo trabajé en el ambiente escolar como intérprete de lenguaje de señas. Esa experiencia me hizo extrañar mi trabajo como maestra, y decidí darle a la educación otra oportunidad, y me alegro de haberlo hecho.

Ha sido un privilegio trabajar en una escuela excelente que valoro mucho durante los últimos cuatro años. Me apasiona la educación, descifrar cómo aprenden los niños e intentar hacer de la escuela, especialmente la clase de español, un lugar en el que los estudiantes quieran estar. Por lo tanto, tenía mucho sentido darle a los blogs otra oportunidad, esta vez con un enfoque educativo. Sí, soy maestra de español y sé que algunas de las cosas sobre las que escribo pueden beneficiar a otros profesores de español o bilingües, pero también soy simplemente maestra.

Lo que quiero decir con "simplemente" maestra es que soy como cualquier docente. Tengo dificultades, tengo buenas ideas, tengo opiniones. Y eso es algo que quiero compartir con cualquier maestro, no solo con el que habla inglés o el que habla español.

Habiendo dicho esto, ¡quería anunciar que el blog de La Misi de Español ahora es bilingüe! Simplemente elige tu idioma de preferencia del botón en la parte superior de cada publicación. ¡Así de fácil! (Aún no he descubierto si–o cómo–puedo hacerlo funcionar desde la página de inicio, pero tan pronto como presiones el botón "leer más" en una publicación, podrás elegir tu idioma). Espero que este nuevo cambio facilite una gran cantidad de conexiones con maestros de todo el mundo.
